How do I transfer my disability benefits to my dependents?
If you are a veteran living in Tennessee who receives disability benefits, you may be eligible to transfer some of those benefits to your dependents. To do this, you must file a Form 21-674, Application to Furnish Financial or Other Assistance to Dependents, with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The form requires basic information about you and your dependents, including their names, birthdates, addresses, and Social Security numbers. You must also provide documentation to prove you are a legal dependent. Once the form is complete, you will submit it to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Once your Application to Furnish Financial or Other Assistance to Dependents is approved, you may transfer some of your disability benefits to your dependents. Dependents may include your spouse, children, or grandchildren. The amount you can transfer depends on your individual disability rating and other factors, such as how many dependents you have and their ages. You may be able to transfer up to a maximum of $1,092 per month to each dependent. You must also complete a Form 21- booklet to send the transfer to the Dependents’ Education Assistance Program. This form will require you to provide information about each dependent, the amount of benefits to transfer, and the period of time you will be transferring benefits. Once the application is approved and the transfer is complete, your dependents will be able to use the transferred benefits to help pay for school, housing, and other expenses. It is important to note that if you are transferring a large amount of disability benefits to your dependents, you may be subject to a reduced disability benefit.
