How do I transfer my disability benefits to my dependents?

In Virginia, transferring disability benefits to dependents is possible through Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC). This program is available to eligible spouses, dependent children, and dependent parents of veterans who have died due to service-related disability or as a result of a service-connected disability. In order to receive DIC, the dependent must be a spouse, child, or parent of the veteran. They must also have remained unmarried and below the age of 18, or over the age of 18 but who are disabled before the age of 18. The dependent must also have been in the care of the veteran for at least one year prior to the veteran’s death. The dependent must apply for DIC by filling out VA Form 21-534, Application for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) and supporting documents. The dependent must also provide proof of their dependent status, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or proof of adoption, and proof of the service-connected disability or death of the veteran. Once the application is accepted by the VA, the dependents will receive a monthly compensation that is generally based on the veteran’s rank at the time of their death. The VA also provides additional payments for medical expenses, dependent housekeeping services, and funeral expenses related to the veteran’s death. If a dependent does not receive the benefits they are owed, they may contact the VA or work with an accredited attorney to get the compensation they deserve.
