What is service connection?

Service connection is a legal term used in Veterans Disability Law in South Carolina. It is used to describe the relationship between an illness or injury that a veteran has suffered and the service they provided in the military. When a veteran has a service-connected medical condition, it means the veteran was diagnosed with an illness or injury that can be linked to their period of active duty in the military. When a veteran is diagnosed with a medical condition and it is established to be service-connected, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has a duty to provide compensation for medical care and disability benefits for that service-connected disability. These veterans’ benefits can cover anything from hospitalization or outpatient treatment to medical exams and tests and even ongoing support like wheelchairs and prosthetics. It’s important to note that service connection is not just for physical injuries, but also mental and emotional health conditions. These kinds of conditions are typically harder to prove a service connection for, but the VA will consider all aspects of a veteran’s service and life to determine the connection. If you are a veteran in South Carolina and believe you are suffering from a medical condition that is related to your service, it is important to contact the VA and apply for veterans’ disability benefits. The VA will be able to review your claim and determine if your condition is service-connected.
