What is a combined disability rating?
A combined disability rating is a percentage that is used to determine the amount of financial compensation a disabled veteran who served in the military is eligible to receive. This rating comes from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and is used to assess the level of disability based on the veteran’s medical condition. In North Carolina, veterans are eligible for a combined disability rating if they have more than one service-connected disability. This rating is not based on the severity of a disability, but rather is the sum of the disability ratings for each of the veteran’s service-connected conditions. For example, if a veteran in North Carolina has two service-connected disabilities that are rated at 10% and 20%, they would be eligible for a combined disability rating of 30%. The VA may then provide financial compensation to the veteran based on this rating. Additionally, a combined disability rating can factor into the veteran’s eligibility for other benefits, such as special allowances for transportation, homebound care, and adaptive housing. In North Carolina, a combined disability rating is calculated using the VA’s Schedule for Rating Disabilities. This schedule assigns a numerical value to each disability according to its severity, and these values are added together to calculate the veteran’s disability rating.
