What is a presumptive service-connected disability?

A presumptive service-connected disability is a disability that a veteran can be presumed to have acquired as a result of their service in the military. This type of disability does not necessarily have a definitive diagnosis or cause but is assumed to have been caused by military service. In Alaska, veterans can receive disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for certain presumptive service-connected disabilities. Presumptive service-connected disabilities are often connected to environmental hazards that a veteran may have been exposed to during their time in the military. For example, if a veteran was exposed to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War, they may be given a presumptive service-connected disability determination for certain types of cancer or other diseases. In addition to environmental hazards, other presumptive service-connected disabilities can include illnesses such as PTSD or a mental health condition that is linked to military service. Usually, the veteran must provide evidence that their service has caused or contributed to their disability in order for them to receive benefits. The VA in Alaska will review a veteran’s presumptive service-connected disability claim to determine if they are eligible for benefits. If approved, this can help the veteran receive the financial assistance they need to manage their disability and live a comfortable life.
