What is a service-connection determination?
A service-connection determination is a decision made by the California Department of Veterans Affairs about whether or not an injury or illness is related to a veteran’s military service. The Department may consider any evidence, including medical records, to determine if a veteran’s condition is service-connected. If a veteran’s injury or illness is found to be service-connected, they may be eligible to receive disability compensation and health care benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In order to receive benefits, a veteran must prove their condition is service-connected. This can be done by providing medical evidence, such as doctor’s reports, laboratory evidence, or statement of medical history, to demonstrate that the condition was a result of their military service. Once the evidence is reviewed and it is found to be valid, the Department will make a service-connection determination. While it is possible to file a claim without medical evidence, it is much easier to prove a service-connection if there is medical evidence to back it up. Additionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs may order an examination or interview if more information is needed to make an accurate determination. Once the service-connection determination is made, the veteran will be notified and may begin to receive their benefits.
