What happens if I miss a deadline?

Failing to meet a deadline in veterans disability law can have significant consequences. Depending on the type of deadline missed, there can be varying levels of repercussions. One of the most common deadlines missed is a deadline for filing an application. In California, veterans must submit their disability claim to the Veterans Administration (VA) within one year of their discharge from the military. If a veteran fails to do so, they may be denied benefits altogether. It is also possible to miss a deadline for appealing a VA decision. Generally, veterans have one year from the date of the VA decision to file an appeal. If a veteran fails to do so, they may be barred from receiving any benefits associated with that decision. It is important to note that there are circumstances under which a deadline can be waived. If a veteran can demonstrate that they were prevented from submitting their application or appeal due to extraordinary circumstances, the VA may still accept the application or appeal after the deadline has passed. Regardless, it is always best for veterans to meet the deadlines associated with their veterans disability law cases. Missing a deadline can result in serious consequences, including being denied benefits and the inability to appeal. Veterans must make sure that their paperwork is properly submitted within the applicable timeframe.
