What is a service-connection determination?
A service-connection determination is a decision made by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regarding a veteran’s disability claim. In order for a claim to be approved, the VA must first determine if the veteran’s disability is connected to their military service. If the VA determines that the disability is related to a veteran’s time in service, then the claim will be approved and the veteran will be eligible for benefits. This determination is known as a service-connection determination. In order to determine a service-connection, the VA will look at a variety of evidence to make its decision. This includes medical evidence, a veteran’s personal account of their time in service, and sometimes the opinion of a medical expert. The VA will then use all of this evidence to decide if the veteran’s disability is truly connected to their military service. If the VA does decide that the disability is service-connected, then the veteran will be eligible to receive VA benefits. These benefits vary from state to state, but in New York, a veteran can receive financial compensation, medical benefits, and education assistance. A service-connection determination is an important part of the VA disability claims process, and all veterans should familiarize themselves with it before filing a claim. Understanding how the VA makes this decision is key to ensuring that a veteran’s disability is properly recognized and they receive the benefits they are entitled to.
