How are disability benefits payments determined?

In Delaware, disability benefits payments for veterans are determined by the amount of disability the veteran is rated. A veteran’s disability rating, or impairment rating, is determined by the Veterans Administration (VA) according to a percent system. The percentage is then used to determine the monthly benefit amount the veteran is entitled to receive. The VA also considers a veteran’s total disability rating and also factors in any dependents they may have. Generally, a higher disability rating coupled with dependents will result in a higher monthly benefit amount. The VA also takes into account any concurrent employment or income earned by the veteran. This means if the veteran is able to work, the VA will factor this into the amount of monetary benefits they are eligible to receive each month. The VA also considers any outside income the veteran may have such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or workers’ compensation. Veterans can also receive special monthly payments or allowances if they are eligible to receive additional benefits due to the nature of their disability. These benefits may include extra payments for severe disabilities, unemployability, blindness and paraplegia. Overall, the VA looks at the full extent of a veteran’s disability rating, any concurrent income, any dependents they may have and any additional disability payments they may qualify for in order to determine the monthly benefit amount they are entitled to receive.
