What are examples of violent crimes?

Violent crimes are any criminal offenses that involve the use of force or the threat of force. In Oregon, examples of violent crimes include assault, robbery, burglary, kidnapping, and homicide. Assault is the use of physical force against another person, or the intent to cause fear of immediate harm. Robbery is the taking of something of value from someone else against their will, using force or the threat of force. Burglary is the unlawful entry into a home or other structure with the intent to commit a crime. Kidnapping is the taking of a person by force or threat of force, usually for ransom or to commit a crime. Homicide is the unlawful killing of a person by another person, with or without a weapon. All of these violent crimes carry serious penalties under Oregon law if convicted.
