Can a juvenile be charged with a violent crime?

In North Carolina, a juvenile (an individual under the age of 18) can be charged with a violent crime. Generally, juveniles are undeniably capable of committing violent acts, just as adults are, and are thus subject to the same punishments as adults would be. North Carolina law states that juveniles may be charged with violent felonies, such as murder, rape, and assault with a deadly weapon. These crimes can result in a lengthy prison sentence if the juvenile is convicted. However, the court does take the age of the juvenile into consideration when determining the punishment for the crime. In addition, the juvenile court system is required to make "reasonable efforts" to rehabilitate the juvenile while emphasizing public safety. The juvenile court system will usually provide services to the juvenile to help them rehabilitate, rather than serving a harsh sentence. These services can include mental health counseling, drug treatment, and educational programming. It is important to note that even if a juvenile is charged with a violent crime, it does not necessarily mean that they will be convicted or receive a harsh sentence. The court will take into consideration the age of the juvenile, any mitigating factors, and the circumstances of the crime when determining the punishment. If the juvenile is found guilty, the court may look to alternatives to jail time such as probation, counseling, or community service.
