What are the rules for paying overtime?

In Tennessee, there are some basic rules that an employer must abide by when it comes to paying overtime. Overtime is defined as any hours worked over 40 hours per week, or 8 hours per day. Employers are required to pay their employees one and a half times their regular rate of pay for any hours worked that qualify as overtime. For example, if an employee makes a rate of $10.00 per hour, then any hours that exceed 40 hours within the given week must be paid at a rate of $15.00 per hour. Similarly, if an employee works 8 hours in one day, they must be paid at the time-and-a-half rate for any additional hours that exceed 8 hours. There are also instances in which an employee can be eligible for double-time pay. This applies to certain jobs that require employees to work in hazardous conditions, or work on Sundays and certain holidays. Under such conditions, the employee is entitled to double their regular rate for each hour worked. It is important to note that employers in Tennessee are not required by law to offer overtime pay to all their employees. However, if they choose to do so, they must abide by the aforementioned regulations. Additionally, any exceptions to these rules, or other agreements concerning wages and overtime pay, must be made in writing and signed by both the employer and employee.
