What are the requirements for meal and rest periods?
In Arizona, employers must provide meal and rest breaks for their non-exempt employees. The requirements for these meal and rest periods depend on the nature of the work and the number of hours worked. For employees who work more than five hours in a day, employers must provide a 30-minute meal break. During this break, the employee must be completely relieved of their work duties. If the employee is not completely relieved of their duties during the meal break, the meal break will not count towards the employer’s legal obligation. If the employee works more than nine hours in a day, they must also receive a second meal break of at least 30 minutes. In addition, employers must also provide employees with reasonable rest breaks during their shifts. Each rest break is usually a 15-minute break that can occur multiple times throughout the workday. It is important that employers understand and abide by these meal and rest break requirements in order to remain compliant with the wage and hour law in Arizona. Failure to do so could result in legal penalties and fines.
