What are the differences between regular pay and overtime pay?
Regular pay refers to the hourly wage rate that an employee receives for working a set amount of hours per week. This amount is the same for each hour the employee works. Overtime pay, on the other hand, is when an employee is paid an additional amount (usually at least one and a half times their regular pay rate) for working over a certain number of hours in a given work week. In Arizona, the wage and hour laws require that employers pay their employees for any overtime worked. All overtime must be paid at a rate of 1.5 times the employee’s regular wages. Arizona has a daily overtime law in which employers must pay their employees double their regular rate of pay for any hours worked over 12 in one day. The wage and hour laws also regulate break periods and how employers can use employee tips. Employees must receive at least 30 minutes of break time for every five hours of continuous work. Employers cannot require employees to share their tips with other employees or use their tips to cover any business expenses.
