What are the requirements for meal and rest periods?

In Maryland, employers must provide employees with meal and rest periods to ensure their employees are well-rested and nourished. Meal periods are generally considered to be a 30-minute period for the employee to consume meals. During meal periods, the employee must be relieved of all duties so that they can enjoy a complete break. Rest periods are generally considered to be periods of 10 minutes for the employee to rest, walk around, and/or use the restroom. Rest periods must be given to employees during their shift if they are working for more than 3.5 hours. If an employee works between 4 and 6 hours, they must be provided with one rest period. If an employee works more than 6 hours, then they must be provided with two rest periods. The employee is not entitled to any wages for meal or rest periods. However, if the rest period or meal period is interrupted or reduced due to workload, the employee must be compensated for the time. It is also important to note that special rules apply to minors. Minors are not allowed to work for more than five hours without a 30-minute meal period, and minors are not allowed to work for more than 6 hours without a 10-minute rest period. Employers should be aware of the laws surrounding meal and rest periods to ensure they are providing the appropriate amount of breaks to their employees. Unlawful meal and rest periods can result in legal consequences.
