What are the restrictions on paying workers under the age of 18?
In Colorado, the wage and hour law sets restrictions on the amount of pay and number of hours that minors under 18 may work. All minors must have a valid work permit to be employed in Colorado. Additionally, minors 14 and 15 years of age are subject to the following restrictions: • Minors 14 and 15 years of age can only work outside of school hours and may not work before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. on any day, including weekends. • Total hours worked must not exceed 8 on any day, or 40 hours in any week when school is not in session. When school is in session, minors 14 and 15 may not work more than 3 hours a day on a school day, 8 hours a day on a nonschool day, 18 hours in any week that school is in session, and 40 hours in any week when school is not in session. • Minors 16 and 17 years of age have no restrictions on the number of hours they may work outside of school hours on any day, including weekends. However, they still must not work before 7:00 a.m. or after 11:00 p.m. • All minors must have one hour of rest for every 5 hours worked and must have at least a 30-minute unpaid break when they work more than 5 consecutive hours. • Employers of minors must keep records of their hours of work and pay.
