What is the difference between compensatory time and overtime pay?
Compensatory time and overtime pay are two different ways employers can pay employees for additional hours worked. Compensatory time, also known as comp time or comp time off, is when an employer gives an employee additional paid time off instead of extra pay for additional hours worked. This is a practice that is legal in some states like Colorado, where employers are allowed to provide up to 160 hours of compensatory time to an employee in a calendar year instead of paying overtime wages. Overtime pay, on the other hand, is when an employer pays employees extra money for additional hours worked. In Colorado, employers are required to pay their employees overtime wages for hours worked over 40 per workweek. An employee can be paid 1.5 times their normal hourly rate for all overtime hours worked. The key difference between compensatory time and overtime pay is that compensatory time gives the employee additional paid time off, whereas overtime pay gives the employee additional money. Therefore, overtime pay is usually the preferred option for employees, as they can use the extra money as they please.
