How is ground water harvested?
Groundwater harvesting is the practice of acquiring and storing surface water or water from underground supplies. In Virginia, groundwater harvesting is regulated by the Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy (DMME). Groundwater harvesting can be used to supplement surface water supplies during periods of low rainfall. Climate variation causes dry spells which can lead to water shortages for farmers and communities. Groundwater harvesting allows for water to be stored underground in aquifers, which can be accessed during times of water scarcity. Aquifers were formed from the slow infiltration of water from the surface into the underlying sediments and rocks. The water is held and stored in the spaces between small particles such as gravel and sand. It is important that groundwater harvesting is undertaken with caution and responsibility, as it is not an infinite supply. Wells and boreholes must be properly constructed, maintained, and monitored to ensure that no harm is done to the surrounding environment. Groundwater harvesting is a sustainable solution for the storage of water. However, it is important for aquifers to be regularly monitored to ensure their health and stability. DMME works with local governments and private individuals to ensure that groundwater harvesting is conducted responsibly and with environmental protection in mind.
