What is a bounty claim?

A bounty claim is a type of legal action available under whistleblower law in Virginia. This type of claim allows whistleblowers to receive a financial reward for reporting fraud or other violations of the law by a private employer. Bounty claims are brought when a whistleblower has reported a violation of the law, and the Virginia Attorney General has intervened to pursue the matter. To qualify for a bounty claim, the whistleblower must have provided original, credible information to the Virginia Attorney General’s Office that enabled them to bring a successful civil or criminal action against the violator. Whistleblowers must file their bounty claim within 90 days of the final judgment or settlement of the matter. They will receive a portion of the funds recovered by the government. Whistleblowers are also protected from retaliatory termination or other punishment by their employers when they bring a bounty claim. This protection is available as long as the whistleblower has not obtained any personal gain from the matter or acted in bad faith. Overall, bounty claims offer an effective way for whistleblowers to receive recognition and a financial reward for their efforts in reporting fraud or violations of the law. Additionally, these claims provide an incentive for whistleblowers to come forward, since the reward is tangible and the protection against retaliation is strong.
