What happens after a whistleblower claim has been filed?
After a whistleblower claim has been filed in Florida, the claim is reviewed by the Florida Department of Financial Services. This department is responsible for protecting the public from fraud, waste, and abuse by ensuring that any claims of wrongdoing are investigated thoroughly. Once the claim has been reviewed, the department may take one of several actions. If the claims are found to have merit, the department may launch a formal investigation. During the investigation, they may interview witnesses, review documents, and collect other evidence to determine if any laws have been violated. If the investigation reveals misconduct, the department can enter into settlement negotiations with the party being accused, or they may refer the case to the appropriate law enforcement authority for criminal prosecution. If the investigation reveals that no laws were violated, the case is dismissed. If the whistleblower claim is successful, the whistleblower may be eligible to receive a financial reward in the form of a percentage of the amount recovered by the government from the accused party. The whistleblower must have acted in good faith and must have reported the wrongdoing to the appropriate authorities in order to be eligible for a financial reward.
