What is a whistleblower reward?
A whistleblower reward is a financial incentive offered to individuals who come forward with information about violations of laws or regulations. In California, these rewards are provided under the California Whistleblower Protection Act (CWPA). Under this law, individuals who report violations of laws and regulations to an appropriate governmental or law enforcement agency may be eligible to receive a reward of up to 15 percent of any financial recovery or settlement that is made as a result of the information they provided. This reward can be shared between the whistleblower and the governmental or law enforcement agency. Whistleblowers may also receive protection from retaliation for their actions in reporting the violation. This could include protection from being fired, demoted, suspended, threatened, harassed, or otherwise discriminated against. In order for an individual to receive a whistleblower reward, they must provide information that is true and is not already publicly known. They must also be the first to provide the information and not act for their own personal gain.
