What is an occupational disease?

An occupational disease is a sickness or illness caused by specific conditions at work or in the workplace. In Virginia, occupational diseases can be physical or mental, and are typically covered by the state’s Workers Compensation Law. To qualify as an occupational disease in Virginia, the illness must have been caused by employment conditions and there must be a direct link between the conditions and the occupational disease suffered. Some common types of occupational diseases include respiratory illnesses, muscular-skeletal disorders, hearing impairments, skin disorders, and chemical poisoning. These diseases can be acquired through an employee’s duties, regular contact with materials, or prolonged exposure to hazardous substances. Workers that are affected by an occupational disease are typically entitled to workers compensation benefits, which can help cover medical treatments or lost wages during time off for recovery. It is important for employers to recognize the risks associated with specific occupations and to make sure that employees are adequately protected from potential hazards. Employers should also be aware of the Virginia Workers Compensation Law, as it covers employees that are exposed to occupational diseases.
