What is Admiralty Law?

Admiralty Law, also known as Maritime Law, is a branch of law that is specific to governing activities that take place on the ocean or in navigable waters. It applies to situations involving marine commerce, navigation, shipping, and the transportation of goods and passengers by water. While Admiralty Law is federal in nature, the state of Kansas still has several statutes related to it. Admiralty Law consists of both national and international law. Under this law, ships are considered to be separate legal entities with rights and duties of their own. This means that all registered ships are considered to have the same legal status, regardless of who owns them. Furthermore, Admiralty Law governs torts (civil wrongs) and crimes committed within the maritime environment, including salvage rights, marine insurance, accidents, collisions, maritime liens, and cargo liens. Admiralty Law also deals with contracts for berthing, cargo, and vessel repairs, as well as ship collisions, salvage rights, and the enforcement of liens (claims) arising out of services rendered to or by a vessel. In Kansas, Admiralty Law is administered by the United States District Court for the District of Kansas, which falls under the jurisdiction of the United States District Courts.
