What is a pre-adoption home assessment?
A pre-adoption home assessment is a series of evaluations of the prospective adoptive family completed prior to the finalization of the adoption process in Indiana. This evaluation is conducted by a state-approved social service agency and includes on-site visits of the home, in-person interviews, and an analysis of both the prospective adoptive parents’ financial and medical information. The purpose of the pre-adoption home assessment is for the social service agency to gain a thorough understanding of the family dynamics, values, and lifestyle of the potential adoptive parents. The social worker for the pre-adoption home assessment may also speak to the family’s friends and extended family to gain additional insight into the family’s ability to raise and care for a child. Additionally, the social worker may ask questions related to the pre-adoptive parent’s willingness to provide a safe and stable home for a child including questions about childcare plans and the parent’s past experience with parenting. The social worker may also ask questions about the parent’s understanding of the child’s cultural heritage and how they plan to ensure the child’s access to their culture. Once the pre-adoption home assessment is complete, the social service agency submits its evaluation to the court. If the parents are deemed to be suitable, the adoption proceedings can continue. If the court believes that the safety and well-being of the child are compromised, the agency may delay or deny the adoption.
