What is the difference between conventional and organic farming?

Conventional farming is the use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to promote the growth of crops. This type of farming is highly productive and enables farmers to increase output while minimizing costs. It also greatly reduces the risk of crop failure due to pests and diseases. The downside of conventional farming is that it can lead to soil degradation, threats to the health of farm workers, and potential environmental damage from the runoff of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Organic farming, on the other hand, is a type of agricultural system that uses natural methods to grow crops without the use of synthetic chemicals. This includes using natural fertilizers, composting, and growing crops in rotation to reduce pest infestations and soil erosion. Organic farming also utilizes sustainable practices such as water conservation, soil conservation, and increased biodiversity. The cost of organic farming is usually higher than conventional farming, however, it has a number of benefits over conventional farming, such as improved soil health, low pesticide levels, and improved food safety and nutrition. In Hawaii, organic farming is regulated by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. Farmers who wish to pursue organic farming must be certified by the Department. The Department also sets requirements for what organic farmers must use in their operations, including soil amendments, pest and weed management methods, and residue testing methods. The Department of Agriculture also inspects organic farms to ensure that they are following organic farming practices.
