What are the laws governing the labeling and packaging of food products?
In Arizona, the labeling and packaging of food products must comply with the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service regulations. These regulations require that all food packaging must include a list of ingredients, nutrition facts, a list of allergens, and other information, such as the name of the producer, what country it was produced in, and the net weight of the product. In addition, all food labels must have a “use by” or “best by” date, which tells consumers when the food will no longer be safe to consume. Allergen information must also be clearly listed on the food label. In Arizona, if a food product contains any of the major food allergens such as milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy, then it must be stated on the food label. If any artificial sweeteners are used in a food item, then the product must be labeled accordingly. It must also have a warning label that the product contains artificial sweeteners and indicate what type of sweetener is used. Finally, all food products must have a standardized Nutrition Facts label that will include the serving size, number of calories and amount of key nutrients in the food. The nutrition facts label must also list the number of servings per container, and indicate the nutrition value for each serving. When labeling and packaging food products in Arizona, it’s important for producers to make sure they comply with all the applicable regulations. This will help ensure that all food products are safe for consumers to eat.
