What is the National Animal Health Protection Act?

The National Animal Health Protection Act (NAHPA) is a law that establishes standards for animal health across all states, including Indiana. It is implemented by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is designed to protect the health and welfare of animals, while also safeguarding the public from the threat of zoonotic diseases. NAHPA requires that animals be inspected for signs of disease and that any sick animals be isolated, treated, and sometimes destroyed, so as to prevent the spread of diseases. Furthermore, any animal that is moved across state lines must have an inspection certificate, and all animal markets and slaughterhouses must also comply with NAHPA standards. The main purpose of the NAHPA is to protect the interests of animal and public health, while ensuring the safety of our food supply. It also provides guidance for states on issues such as the handling of animal carcasses, disease control, and humane animal care. The NAHPA includes the establishment of a nationwide surveillance system, through which USDA can detect and respond to any new animal diseases. The NAHPA not only emphasizes animal health and welfare, but also emphasizes higher quality food production. By requiring inspections, NAHPA helps to ensure animal products are of a higher quality, allowing them to be sold in the market. Ultimately, the NAHPA works to protect the health and safety of animals, as well as the public, by providing an effective and consistent set of guidelines for the regulation of animal agriculture.
