Are there any restrictions on the use of hormones in beef production?
Yes, there are restrictions on the use of hormones in beef production in Washington. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) strictly regulates the use of hormones in beef production with their Hormone Regulation Program. The WSDA regulates the use of the following hormones in beef production: estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, zeranol, and trenbolone acetate. The WSDA requires that producers who wish to use hormones to produce beef must register their operation with them and obtain a producer certificate for each animal herd. The producer must also submit an affidavit to the WSDA that states that the animal was given the hormone at the correct dosage, at the right time, and in the right manner. To ensure compliance, the WSDA requires that all livestock receiving hormones must be labeled with an ear tag that identifies the animal, hormone used, and date of administration. Producers must also maintain accurate and up-to-date records detailing when and how hormones were administered. In addition, all beef produced using hormones must carry a label that states the beef was derived from animals given hormones. This label must be included on all retail packages, as well as display at all wholesale meat markets. By law, retailers are also required to post a sign in their place of business notifying customers that the beef was produced with hormones. Violators of the regulation are subject to criminal penalties, including fines and even jail time. The WSDA also holds the power to suspend or revoke the producer certificate issued to an offender.
