What are the laws governing the transport of livestock?

In Delaware, there are several laws governing the transport of livestock, including the Delaware Livestock Transport Act. This act is designed to ensure that livestock is properly cared for during transport and is meant to reduce stress on animals during shipment. The act states that any livestock being transported must be given adequate food, water, rest, and shelter, and that any transport that is abnormally long must be authorized by the Department of Agriculture. Under this act, anyone transporting livestock must follow the state regulations on the number of hours that the animals may be transported without rest. In addition, the animals must be inspected and have a clean bill of health prior to shipment. Any person or company transporting livestock must also be licensed by the Delaware Department of Agriculture to do so, and must also register their vehicle and obtain a license plate. The Delaware Livestock Transport Act also requires that a public official be present to supervise the loading and unloading of animals, and that the driver of the vehicle transporting the animals keep a record of the date, time, and destination of the transport. In addition, the driver must report any injury or illness sustained by the animals during transport to the Department of Agriculture. Any person or company in violation of the Delaware Livestock Transport Act may face fines and other penalties. Therefore it is important for those transporting livestock to be familiar with the laws in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the animals.
