What are the laws governing the use of genetically modified seeds in farming?

In Arizona, all crops grown with genetically modified (GM) seed must be labeled as such. The Arizona Department of Agriculture regulates the use of GM seeds to ensure that the crops grown from them are safe for consumption. Any farmer who wishes to use GM seeds must obtain a permit from the Arizona Department of Agriculture. This permit must include a plan describing how the farmer will monitor and manage the GM crop to prevent the spread of GM pollen to other crops. Additionally, the permit must specify the types of GM seed that the farmer is allowed to use. Arizona also requires farmers who wish to use GM seeds to record and report the location and amount of GM crop planted and harvested to the Arizona Department of Agriculture. These records must be kept for at least three years. The Arizona Department of Agriculture has additional rules and regulations in place to protect consumers from genetically modified seeds. For example, farmers must test their soil and crops for contamination with GM seeds. If a crop is found to be contaminated, the process for containment and management must be followed immediately. Additionally, any GM seed that is not approved by the Department of Agriculture must not be used. By following the state’s regulations governing the use of genetically modified seeds, farmers in Arizona can help ensure that consumers are safe from potential health and environmental risks associated with genetically modified crops.
