Are there any restrictions on the use of growth hormones for dairy cows?

In Virginia, the use of growth hormones for dairy cows is strictly regulated. The state has a detailed list of approved therapeutic drugs for use in dairy cows, and only those drugs may be used in the production of milk for human consumption. Growth hormones are prohibited under these regulations. Growth hormones are hormones that increase production of milk in cows, making them more productive as dairy cows. These hormones can increase the production of milk by up to 15%, however, they can also increase the risk of mastitis, an inflammation of the udder caused by bacteria. In addition, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services prohibits the use of any growth hormone other than the ones that are specifically listed in their regulations. This includes hormones like rBST, rBGH, and recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST). The Department also requires that all milk products in Virginia be labeled to indicate whether or not they have been produced with the use of hormones. Labels that say “No hormones administered” or “No hormones have been used in the production of this milk” must be used to inform customers about the source of the product. Overall, growth hormones are not allowed for use in dairy cows in Virginia, and the state has strict regulations regarding their use and labeling of products that have used them. Violation of these rules can result in a fine or other penalties.
