What is the FAA's role in aircraft noise control?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plays a significant role in aircraft noise control in Texas. The FAA establishes and enforces the aviation regulations and standards that all aircraft must adhere to in order to ensure a safe and efficient national airspace system. In addition to safety regulations, the FAA is responsible for initiatives that reduce aircraft noise impacting communities near airports. The FAA has implemented the Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT) that allows for the prediction of aircraft noise levels from takeoff to landing. By using noise data collected from airports, the AEDT can be used to analyze the noise impact of aircrafts and provide solutions to better control sound levels. The FAA also created the Aircraft Noise Abatement Program which requires operators to use noise-reduction techniques to reduce aircraft noise in residential or densely populated areas. These noise-reduction techniques include the usage of noise-reducing engines, timing of take-off and landings and the usage of quieter flight management techniques such as shallow descents. In addition, the FAA has partnered up with the Texas Department of Transportation to provide grants to the state that will be used to lessen the impact of aircraft noise on communities. These grants are used to fund noise mitigation projects, noise-abatement education, the development of noise compatibility programs, and noise-control research. Overall, the FAA is responsible for developing and enforcing regulations that help reduce and control aircraft noise levels across Texas, as well as providing funding for noise mitigation projects and research.
