What are the legal requirements for pilot training and certification?
In Texas, all pilots must complete the appropriate levels of training and certification before they are legally allowed to operate an aircraft. In order to be eligible for certification, a pilot must be at least 17 years old and have at least 250 hours of flight experience in an aircraft. They must also be able to demonstrate excellent knowledge and understanding of federal aviation laws. Additionally, they must pass an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) exam that tests their knowledge in subjects such as aircraft structure, aircraft engine operation, navigation, weather, and regulations. Once a pilot has completed their training and certification, they must also obtain a medical certificate from a designated Aviation Medical Examiner to demonstrate they are medically fit to operate an aircraft. In addition to the basic requirements for pilot training and certification, all pilots must also complete a flight review every 24 months and complete an FAA-approved safety course every 24 months. Finally, all pilots must abide by the rules set forth by the FAA, which include abiding by radar contact requirements, altitude rules, and maneuvering guidelines.
