How is airspace classification determined?
Airspace classification is determined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA is responsible for managing the airspace over the United States, and it is divided into several sections. The airspace within each section is then further classified into different categories. The US airspace is divided into four main classes--Class A, B, C, and E. Class A airspace is the most strictly regulated airspace and covers the most heavily trafficked areas. It is also the highest altitude airspace, generally starting at 18,000 feet above sea level and up. Aircraft flying in Class A airspace must remain in contact with air traffic controllers at all times, so they must also be equipped with the appropriate type of navigational equipment. Class B airspace is the second most regulated airspace and is generally found around major metropolitan areas. It begins at the surface level and extends up to 10,000 feet above sea level. All aircraft flying in this airspace must be equipped with a two-way radio in order to receive control instructions from air traffic controllers. Class C airspace is found around airports and extends from the ground up to 4,000 feet. Aircraft flying in Class C airspace must stay in contact with the air traffic controllers. Finally, Class E airspace is the least restricted of all the airspace classes, covering areas not covered by any of the other classes. It begins at the surface level and extends up to 17,999 feet in altitude. Aircraft flying in Class E airspace are not required to stay in contact with air traffic controllers, though they should still be aware of other aircraft in the area. In Louisiana, the FAA is responsible for determining the appropriate airspace classification for the entire state. It is important for pilots to be aware of the airspace classification when operating their aircraft in order to stay safe and remain in compliance with FAA regulations.
