How are aircraft emissions regulated?
Air pollution associated with the aviation industry is a growing environmental concern, and thus the State of Washington has created laws to regulate aircraft emissions. At the federal level, emissions from commercial aircraft must meet current standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These standards apply to both small and large aircraft, and are enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Additionally, the EPA has implemented the “cap-and-trade” emission program, which limits the amount of atmospheric pollutants that can be emitted and requires companies to buy emission credits to remain within their emissions limits. At the state level, Washington’s Department of Ecology oversees the implementation of the state’s Clean Air Rule, which regulates aircraft emissions. This rule sets restrictions on emissions of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide from aircraft engines, as well as the amount of particulate matter that can be released into the atmosphere. Additionally, the rule requires aircraft operators to submit annual aircraft emission reports. Overall, the State of Washington has implemented regulations and standards to reduce the environmental impact of aircraft emissions. In addition to the federal and state regulations, aircraft operators can also voluntarily reduce their emissions through technologies such as fuel-efficient aircraft, fuel-saving routes, and more efficient flight operations. Through these efforts, Washington is helping to reduce aircraft pollution and improve air quality.
