What are the legal requirements for aircraft maintenance and operations personnel?
In Washington, aircraft maintenance and operations personnel are legally required to meet a number of regulations in order to perform their duties. They must hold an Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) Certificate and must keep up to date with all regulations and standards that apply to their specific field. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Aviation Division is responsible for setting regulations and standards for aircraft maintenance personnel and operations personnel. They must also ensure compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) regulations, which are set by the agency’s Aircraft Certification Office. The FAA has established what is known as the 14 CFR Part 145 regulations for aircraft maintenance personnel. These regulations cover areas such as proper maintenance, repair, and inspection of aircraft. In addition, aircraft maintenance personnel must also be qualified to perform tasks such as airworthiness inspections and troubleshooting of aircraft systems. Operations personnel, such as pilots, must also meet certain standards and regulations set out by the FAA in order to operate aircraft safely. For example, pilots must hold a valid Airline Transport Pilot Certificate, must provide proof of medical fitness, and must have a valid pilot’s license. In addition, they must comply with Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) that apply to their specific area of operations. Ultimately, aircraft maintenance and operations personnel must comply with all regulations and standards set out by both the WSDOT Aviation Division and the FAA in order to safely and legally operate aircraft in the state of Washington.
