What is the process of aircraft noise control?
In Washington, aircraft noise control is a process designed to limit the amount of noise created by an aircraft during flight. The process is usually implemented in three stages. Firstly, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sets standards for the amount of noise that commercial aircraft must generate. To do this, the FAA uses an aircraft noise certification process which involves testing planes to determine the level of noise they produce. The certification must be renewed on a regular basis meaning that aircraft must regularly be tested to ensure they are still below the required limit. Secondly, the FAA require aircraft operators to use ‘quieter’ flight paths and patterns when passing over inhabited areas. This includes carefully planning the approach and departure of aircraft in order to minimise the disturbance to those living in the area. Lastly, the FAA actively encourages aircraft manufacturers to develop quieter planes. Aircraft engines are routinely tested to measure noise levels from the exhaust and aircraft manufacturers are encouraged to implement changes in order to reduce the amount of noise produced. Overall, aircraft noise control is a process which is largely led by the FAA in order to reduce the disturbance caused by aircraft noise. Whilst the regulation of noise standards is important, the FAA believes that the best way to reduce aircraft noise is to encourage the development of quieter aircraft.
