What are the legal requirements for aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO)?
In California, aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) is regulated by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. These regulations require that all aircraft maintainers and repairmen be FAA certified in order to legally work on any aircraft owned or operated by a government entity, business or individual. The FAA requires that aircraft maintainers and repairmen maintain detailed records for all maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) work that is performed on an aircraft. These records must include the date of the work, the aircraft type, the type of work performed, the aircraft owner’s information and the signature of the person performing the work. This is done to ensure that all work performed meets the safety standards and regulations set forth by the FAA. MRO workers must also be qualified to make necessary repairs and overhauls according to FAA regulations. This includes a thorough knowledge of all applicable regulations as well as the skills and experience necessary to make the repairs and overhauls safely and accurately. Finally, all MRO work must be done by a qualified individual and must meet or exceed FAA standards. Any defects found must be reported to the FAA and the aircraft must be inspected after any major inspection, repair, or overhaul work. The FAA has very comprehensive regulations when it comes to aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul and all of them must be followed in order to remain in compliance with the law.
