The Convention on Unlawful Interference with Civil Aviation is an international law that was concluded in Tokyo in 1963, and entered into force in 1973. This convention outlines the importance of international protection of aircraft and passengers from illegal and violent interference. The primary purpose of this convention is to safeguard the safety of aircraft, passengers and crew aboard international flights. The Convention on Unlawful Interference with Civil Aviation was developed to ensure that the international community had certain responsibilities in regards to aircraft and passengers during international flights. These responsibilities require each state to abstain from directly or indirectly utilizing airspace to conduct activities that are considered a threat to international civil aviation. The convention also outlines a range of measures that each signatory state is obligated to take in order to protect aircraft and passengers from interference, including measures to detect and prevent hijackings, bombings and other violent acts.
