What are the requirements for aircraft maintenance and operations personnel?

In Oregon, operation and maintenance of aircraft is regulated by the state in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Aircraft maintenance and operations personnel must be certified to carry out their duties. To become certified, aircraft technicians must either obtain an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate or a Repairman Certificate. To receive an A&P certificate, applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a series of written and practical tests. The written exam covers all areas of aircraft maintenance, while the practical exam is hands-on and evaluates the applicant’s ability to identify and repair aircraft components. The Repairman Certificate is less involved and is issued to technicians who only work on specific aircraft. The applicant must be at least 16 years old and demonstrate a basic knowledge of the aircraft through a written exam. In addition to meeting the FAA requirements, personnel must also be able to show proof of Oregon state certification. This includes proof of several hours of on-the-job training, a drug screening test, and a background check. All aircraft repair technicians must have a valid Oregon mechanic’s license to work within the state. In order to keep their certifications and licenses up-to-date, aircraft maintenance and operations personnel must complete regular safety training courses and obtain a current FAA medical certificate. Safety is of paramount importance when operating and maintaining aircraft in Oregon and across the country. These regulations and certifications ensure that aircraft operations and maintenance personnel are properly trained and qualified to complete their work in a competent and safe manner.
