What are the consequences of failing to pay alimony?

In Oklahoma, failure to pay alimony can have serious consequences and could even result in jail time. The court could issue an arrest warrant for someone that doesn’t pay alimony, and the person could be arrested and brought before the court. The court could also have the person found in contempt of court, which is the willful disregard or disobedience of a court order. The court could order additional sanctions such as garnishment of wages or liens on any property owned by the person in arrears. It can also issue a writ of execution, which is a court order that authorizes the sheriff to seize a person’s property or funds to satisfy a judgment. The court could also suspend any professional licenses or privilege to practice in the state such as a driver’s license. If a person is found in contempt of court, the court could impose a civil or criminal penalty. The maximum civil penalty is $200 per day and the maximum criminal penalty is a fine up to $500 or up to six months in jail. A person must pay the alimony before the court will consider any motion to modify the alimony. The court could also order the person in arrears to pay for the other party’s attorney’s fees. So, it is important for someone obligated to pay alimony to comply with a court order and make sure all payments are made on time. Failing to do so can result in serious legal consequences.
