How is artwork appraised?

Artwork appraisal is the process of assigning a monetary value to a piece of art. This is done so that insurance companies can properly assess the value of the art in case of theft or damage, and so that the artist can be paid a fair market value for their work if it is sold. Art appraisal in Pennsylvania is typically handled by experienced art appraisers. When appraising artwork, the appraiser will look at the quality, condition, age, and history of the piece. They will also keep in mind the artist’s reputation and the general market value for similar works. The appraiser will need to research information about the artist’s life and works to determine an accurate appraisal value. The appraiser must also adhere to ethical principals when evaluating the art. An appraisal assessment also takes into account other factors such as the general economic climate, the state or condition of the art, the availability of similar works, and any potential willingness of buyers to purchase the piece. In Pennsylvania, art appraisals must be done in accordance with the USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice). To provide an accurate appraisal, the appraiser will most likely need to appraise the artwork in person, as it is not possible to accurately appraise artwork from photographs alone. The appraiser will also most likely need to witness the documentation process that accompanies the artwork, as this will provide more information to determine an accurate appraisal.
