What are the laws about distracted driving?

In Virginia, distracted driving is a major issue that has become an increasingly serious safety concern. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has implemented several laws in order to reduce the number of distracted driving incidents on the roads. According to the DMV, drivers are prohibited from using handheld cell phones while driving, and the only time a driver may use their cell phone is to make an emergency call. The DMV also has banned all texting while behind the wheel. This includes not only sending or receiving texts, but also reading any messages, emails, or other electronic communication. Drivers are also not allowed to use their cell phones to access the internet while driving. Furthermore, according to the DMV, drivers should avoid any activity that takes their attention away from the road, such as eating, drinking, grooming, and using GPS. All activities which require more than one hand should be avoided. In addition to these restrictions, there are certain age-based restrictions for drivers operating a motor vehicle. Drivers under the age of 18 are not allowed to use a cell phone while driving in Virginia, regardless of if it’s handheld or hands-free. Penalties for breaking any of these distracted driving laws can be severe, including up to a $125 fine per violation, the loss of license points, and, in extreme cases, a license suspension. In short, the Virginia DMV has implemented multiple laws to discourage distracted driving. It is important for drivers to follow these laws in order to reduce the risk of an accident.
