What are the laws about child restraint systems?

In Washington, the law requires that all children younger than 8 years old and shorter than 4 feet, 9 inches are secured in a child safety seat or a booster seat while riding in a vehicle. All children 8 years old and older, and those who are 4 feet, 9 inches or taller must be secured with a seat belt. All children under the age of 13 must be secured in the back seat of the vehicle. It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that all children in their vehicle are properly restrained in an appropriate car seat or booster seat. Failure to comply with this law can result in a fine and court fees of up to $180. Car seats and booster seats must meet the standards outlined by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213. These standards are designed to ensure the safety of children while they are in a vehicle. Parents are encouraged to read and follow the instructions provided with the car seat or booster seat in order to ensure the correct installation and use of the child safety device. In addition, parents should be familiar with the various types of car seats and booster seats available on the market. Convertible car seats or all-in-one car seats are designed for larger children and are able to be used as both forward facing and rear facing car seats. High-back booster seats are also available for children and provide additional support and protection for their head and neck. By following these laws in Washington and using the appropriate child safety device, parents can ensure the safety of their children in the event of an automobile accident.
