What are the laws about street racing?

In Texas, street racing is illegal and could result in criminal penalties. The law states that a person commits an offense if they participate or offer to participate in a drag race, drag race exhibition, or speed contest. Participating in such an event includes driving or competing in a race, providing a location for such a race, and providing vehicles or parts for racing. It is also an offense to actively watch such a race and it is illegal to block the roadway with a vehicle or persons as a way to defray traffic during a race. Any person convicted of participating in a street racing activity could be charged with a misdemeanor, which carries a sentence of up to one year in jail, and/or a fine of up to $4,000. Additionally, the court may order a suspension of the offender’s driver’s license. If the court does suspend the license, it may order a special restricted license for the individual allowing limited driving privileges. Also, if an accident occurs during a street race in Texas, the person who caused the accident can be held responsible for all resulting damages. This can include criminal charges such as negligence or manslaughter if someone is injured or killed. As such, it is important to understand that there are serious consequences for illegal street racing and that it is not worth the risk.
