What are the laws about carrying hazardous materials in a vehicle?
In Texas, it is illegal to transport any hazardous material in a vehicle or trailer without the proper permitting and safety measures. Hazardous materials can be anything from explosives to compressed gases, and even materials which are simply identified as “hazardous” by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These materials can be extremely dangerous to the health of people, property, and the environment, therefore, the state of Texas requires all drivers hauling these materials to use appropriate packaging and labeling. In addition, all drivers carrying hazardous materials are required to post warning signs on the outside of the vehicle. These signs are meant to alert other drivers, pedestrians, or responders of the hazardous materials being transported. Furthermore, all drivers carrying hazardous materials must display the appropriate placards and markings clearly on the vehicle. Before transporting hazardous materials, all drivers must obtain authorization from the state of Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Additionally, the FMCSA, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Texas Department of Transportation all have rules and regulations to ensure the safety of those transporting and handling hazardous materials. Overall, the state of Texas has laws in place to protect people, property, and the environment from hazardous materials that could potentially be carried in vehicles. Anyone transporting these materials must take the necessary steps to ensure all safety protocols are followed.
