What are the laws about carrying hazardous materials in a vehicle?
In Washington, it is illegal to transport hazardous materials in a vehicle without a permit. This includes materials like explosives, flammable gases and liquids, and any other hazardous materials that may cause harm if involved in an accident. The Washington Department of Transportation sets the standards for the safe transportation of hazardous materials, which specifies the vehicle must be labeled with the type of hazardous material being transported, the amount, and the origin and destination of the material. The vehicle must also be equipped with a fire extinguisher and spill kits with absorbent material on board. Drivers must adhere to all other traffic laws as well. Drivers are also required to get both a medical and background check to show they are qualified to transport hazardous materials, and they must get a special license if the material being carried requires it. Depending on the type of material, additional safety features and equipment may be required. Dangerous cargo may need to be secured with straps and netting, with additional placards and warning signs posted to alert other drivers of the materials on board. The driver must also keep records of what he is carrying, including manifests, bills of lading, and invoices, and must update them regularly. Failure to do so can lead to fines, so it is important to abide by the regulations set by the Department of Transportation.
