What are the laws about loud exhaust systems?

In California, automobile law states that drivers must not modify their cars to be louder than factory standards. California considers any modified mufflers, tail pipes, air intake systems, or exhaust systems with an average sound level of 95 decibels or more to be too loud. If a driver is found to be in violation of these laws, they could face a citation or a fine. There are also “sound enforcement” laws. These laws allow police officers to use a sound level meter to determine the sound level of a car’s exhaust system. If the sound level is determined to exceed the legal limit, a ticket or a fine can be issued. In addition to these laws, California requires that vehicles meet certain exhaust emission requirements as a part of their annual smog check. Vehicles that do not meet these emission standards must be repaired in order to pass the smog check and be legally driven on California roads. All in all, California has strict laws in place concerning loud exhaust systems. It is best for drivers to ensure that their exhaust systems meet the legal sound limits and emission requirements. Failure to do so may result in costly fines and legal ramifications.
