What is the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)?
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is an agency of the United States government that regulates civil aviation. It operates as a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation and is responsible for the safety of aircraft operations, air traffic control, and airports. The FAA was formed in 1958 and operates from its headquarters located in Washington, D.C. The FAA establishes regulations that govern the operation and maintenance of aircraft, air navigation, and airport standards. Its other responsibilities include providing funding for the maintenance and construction of airports, issuing and revoking pilot certificates, and the enforcement of aviation laws in the U.S. The FAA also works with other government agencies to develop national policies and regulations that are intended to improve aviation safety and promote the efficient and safe use of airspace. In Colorado, aircraft operators must also comply with the rules and regulations of the state-level agency that oversees aviation - the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics. The Division of Aeronautics is responsible for the licensing and operations of pilots, aircraft, and airports in the state. The agency also works with industry partners, aviation associations, and other stakeholders to ensure that all Colorado regulations comply with national FAA regulations.
