What are the requirements for air taxi and air charter operations?

Air taxi and air charter operations in the District of Columbia are subject to the same set of regulations and requirements as other aircraft. All aircraft must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and comply with the FAA’s operational regulations, which include requirements for pilots, aircraft maintenance and airworthiness, and air traffic control communications. To operate an air taxi or air charter service, pilots must have a commercial pilot’s license and ratings enabling them to fly the type of aircraft used in the operation. They must also hold an instrument rating, have a minimum of 500 hours total flying time and 100 hours in the aircraft make and model to be used, or pass a special FAA check ride. The aircraft must also be inspected and approved for airworthiness by the FAA. In addition, commercial charter operations must obtain an FAA operating certificate, which requires the operator to follow additional safety regulations. These regulations include having an operations manual, training and qualification standards, and properly maintaining the aircraft. All air taxi and air charter operators must also obtain a DC Air Taxi permit and follow the regulations of the DC Aviation Administration. Overall, air taxi and air charter operations have extensive safety requirements in the District of Columbia in order to ensure the safety of pilots and passengers alike.
